nFADP / GDPR

Fully compliant

In many associations, teams and families, communication runs over WhatsApp – and therefore over Meta servers in the US. Even when message contents are encrypted, who communicates with whom and when, which groups exist and how often people write are metadata that a US corporation analyses. For sensitive association, business or customer communication, that is a problem.

The alternative is your own chat server based on Matrix – the open, decentralised protocol for secure communication. Your team uses Element as an app in the browser, on iOS, Android and desktop; the interface feels like a modern messenger. The difference: every message runs over your own server in a Swiss data centre, end-to-end encrypted and nFADP-compliant. To make the switch seamless, you can connect your existing WhatsApp account via a WhatsApp bridge – so you stay reachable while your team moves over.

You reach the highest level of privacy as soon as your contacts also chat on Matrix: then you communicate entirely without American providers. Through Matrix federation, different Swiss and European servers can connect with one another – an open network of independent operators instead of a single central corporation. OpenHosting runs your server fully managed: you chat, we take care of operations, updates and backups.

Your benefits with OpenHosting

Your own server instead of Meta's cloud

Your chats and metadata live on your own server in the Zurich region – not in Meta's WhatsApp infrastructure in the US.

WhatsApp bridge for the transition

Connect your existing WhatsApp account via a bridge and reach WhatsApp contacts directly from Element – ideal for a gradual switch.

End-to-end encrypted

Messages between Matrix users are end-to-end encrypted. Between Matrix servers, no message leaves Swiss soil.

Familiar apps for every device

Element is available for web, iOS, Android, Windows, macOS and Linux. It's as easy to use as the major messengers.

Why not just stay with WhatsApp?

For private messages, a messenger is often enough. But as soon as it comes to association, business or customer communication, the usual options show clear weaknesses:

WhatsApp

Owned by Meta, operated in the US. Message contents are encrypted, but metadata (who, when, with whom) accrues at a US corporation and is subject to the US CLOUD Act.

Signal

Very private, but a centralised service you cannot self-host. It is not designed for a team workspace with your own domain, user management and control over the infrastructure.

Slack / Microsoft Teams

Convenient, but US cloud services with per-user licence costs and data outside your control. Data sovereignty and federation are not on offer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still reach WhatsApp contacts with this?

Yes, via a WhatsApp bridge (mautrix-whatsapp). You link your own WhatsApp account by QR code, and WhatsApp chats appear in Element. The bridge uses an unofficial WhatsApp interface – under normal use this is unproblematic, though a small residual risk of a WhatsApp ban remains, as with all unofficial clients. For maximum privacy, chat Matrix-to-Matrix, without the bridge.

Can American servers see my chats?

Between Matrix users, no: messages are end-to-end encrypted and run exclusively over your server in Switzerland. Only if you use the WhatsApp bridge does the WhatsApp side of the conversation still run over Meta – and that affects only chats with WhatsApp contacts.

How much effort is the switch for my team?

Low. We set up your server including Element and an optional WhatsApp bridge; your team just installs the Element app and signs in. The experience matches common messengers. On request, we support the onboarding.

What does the WhatsApp alternative cost?

Managed Matrix hosting starts at CHF 29 per month for up to 25 users, including your own server, daily backups and support. The Business plan with up to 100 users, a configured WhatsApp bridge and hourly backups costs CHF 79 per month.
