Synapse is the go-to home server for the Matrix protocol – the open, decentralised network for secure communication. Instead of running your team chats via corporate services such as Slack or Microsoft Teams in US-based clouds, with Synapse you can run your own chat server: hosted in Switzerland, end-to-end encrypted and under your control. With Managed Matrix Hosting from OpenHosting, you receive the home server complete with Element as the user interface, fully set up – you chat, we run the infrastructure.

Synapse is the backbone of the Matrix network: it manages users, rooms and end-to-end encryption, can federate with other servers, and can be connected to WhatsApp, Signal and other services via bridges. This ensures your team remains reachable during the transition, whilst the actual communication increasingly takes place privately via your Swiss server.

How much does a hosted Matrix server cost? ▾

Managed Synapse starts at CHF 29 per month with OpenHosting for up to 25 users, including your own home server, daily backups and email support. The Business Plan, which supports up to 100 users, includes federation and bridges set up, and hourly backups, costs CHF 79 per month.

What is the difference between Synapse and Element? ▾

Synapse is the server (home server), Element is the app. Synapse runs your Matrix network in the background, whilst Element is the interface your team uses to chat. With OpenHosting, both are included in the managed hosting package – we run Synapse with Element Web as the client.

Where is the data for my Matrix server stored? ▾

Exclusively in Swiss data centres in the Zurich region. Swiss law (nDSG) applies; your messages are not subject to the US CLOUD Act. Chats between Matrix users are also end-to-end encrypted.

Can my server connect to other Matrix servers? ▾

Yes. Via Federation (Port 8448), your home server can communicate with the entire Matrix network – or remain closed if you prefer. You can also set up bridges to WhatsApp, Signal and other services.
